Things to Do in the Rio Grande Valley

If you enjoy spending time outdoors, head to Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park to spot rare birds and enjoy the warm weather. If beaches are more your thing, Isla Blanca offers beautiful gulf views and lots of sand on South Padre Island. While there, make sure to sample some local seafood.

To explore the area’s wildlife in a more constructed way, visit the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge with more than 700 kinds of animals and birds, 300 kinds of butterflies, and 1,200 kinds of plants. You can also spend the day at Gladys Porter Zoo to see a wide range of animals, some native to Texas but most from all over, including zebras, kangaroos, giraffes, and rhinos. We also highly recommend spending a day at the Dolphin Research and Sea Life Nature Center.

Looking for an educational weekend? Visit some of Rio Grande Valley’s many museums, like the Children’s Museum of Brownsville, the Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum, the International Museum of Art and Science, the Mission Historical Museum, and the Museum of South Texas History.

Finally, if you need a little adventure, head to Sclitterbahn Beach Waterpark or Gravity Adventure Park.
